| NOMINATING PETITION |
Pursuant to Section 2-5-102 (b), TCA, nominating petitions must be issued by the county election commission office and shall include the name of the candidate, the office sought, signature of person issuing petition and date issued. These petitions may not be altered or photocopied, any petition which has been altered or photocopied will not be accepted.
A minimum of twenty-five (25) signatures with addresses of registered voters is required to qualify. Addresses given on the petition must be the same as listed on the signers' registration records.
Any person seeking election to a judicial office that is required by law to be held by an attorney shall certify on his/her nominating petition for such office that such person is licensed to practice law in this state and shall place on such petition his/her Supreme Court registration number. Any person failing to comply with this section shall be disqualified from having his/her name placed on the election ballot for such judicial office.
If a candidate is running from a district, the signers must reside and be registered in that district.
As a general rule, it is only necessary that the petition contain about twice as many signatures as the minimum to insure that at least twenty-five (25) are properly registered voters. However, the petitions issued contain spaces for 86 signatures.
The candidate must fill out and sign the section (To Be Completed By Candidate) on the lst page of the petition and sign each subsequent page at the top-left on the line below where his/her name is printed. Also, the candidate is asked to sign and date the last two pages regarding opening the machines after the election and whether he/she has any relatives who will be serving at the polls for that election.
Independent candidates must file by the same qualifying deadline as primary candidates. Their name will not appear on the ballot until the general election.
Petitions will be checked in this office for a sufficient number of properly registered voters' signatures and addresses. The petitioner will be notified if the petition does not contain the required number of signatures and addresses and, time permitting, a supplemental sheet will be issued for obtaining additional signatures and addresses which must be filed by the qualifying deadline.

| SOURCE OF INCOME DISCLOSURE STATEMENT AND CAMPAIGN FINANCIAL REPORTS |
An Appointment of Treasurer Form will be given when the petition form is issued. This appointment must be made and filed in the Election Commission Office before any money is taken in or spent on a campaign. Except for judicial offices, a candidate may appoint himself. An opinion regarding the judicial code of ethics will be given to candidates who are issued a petition for judicial office.
Forms for filing Source of Income Disclosure Statement and Campaign Financial Reports will be given when the Petition is filed, along with instructions and dates for filing.
All of these statements are required by law and must be timely filed accordingly. Failure to do so will result in a penalty. | | | |
